First of all, Ulls decided a change was needed to his. Since the 21,000 km battering his scoot received in 2006, little had been done to overhaul the tired Vespa. The engine needed a rebuild, so while they were at it, a Pinasco 215 touring cylinder was installed along with a long stroke crankshaft. The handle bar top and bottom were removed and set aside in the spares bin, and a set of chromed drag bars with quick action throttle put on instead. An MBD gear changer was fitted to the left side of the bars, and although a little tight, did the job.
12V lighter sockets were fitted to both scooters to charge phones and other electrical equipment. Unfortunately, with the time constraints, a few things were rushed toward the end of the planning stage. The headlight was only fitted in a temporary fashion, and it was known that this would probably not last much past the trip. It actually failed in the last few days and had to be removed. The speedo (simple bicycle type) also failed, but much earlier.
It was still a reliable vehicle and provided much enjoyment especially in the last week. When Ulls and Brooke hired a ute to carry one of the scoots back to Devonport, they were also able to relieve the burden and weight of the bags. This gave Ulls a chance to really enjoy riding his creation, and what an amazing backdrop he had to do this by.
